Nvidia GeForce GTX 460 1GB Fermi Graphic Card

Now, Nvidia has finally released a smart card based on a new brand, designed from the ground up to be smaller and less powerful, but should offer in terms of all other aspects of a graphics card, the heat consumption electrical noise, and prices. This card is the GTX 460 and the chip is based on is called the GF104.

We will not detail the internal architecture of Fermi in this journal (for that, we refer to our review of the GTX 470) but we will give you a brief overview of the differences between GF100 and GF104.

GF100 contains 512 Stream Processors (SP), or core Nvidia Cuda as he likes to call them, who are the main processing units of the chip. These are divided into sets of 32, in what is known as a Streaming Multiprocessor (SM). It also adds four texture units, the cache, thread schedulers, and the polymorphic engine, which manages the process of geometry as tessellation.

Four of these SMS messages are then combined to form a cluster of systemic therapy (GIC), which basically just adds a raster engine (the bit that converts 3D models into 2D pixels). Finally, four of these CPGs are added together with other elements of thread scheduling, the host interface, memory controllers, ROPs (48 of them are divided into six sections), and 512 KB of L2 cache. The result is a huge, hot chip that contains an enormous 3.1 billion transistors. However, due to production problems, the GTX has 480, an SMS disabled so that you get 480 PS, 15 SMS and 60 texture units.

For GF104, all the basics are very similar, but their proportions have been manipulated. So you get 384 PS, divided between just eight SMS, giving you 48 CHF / MS. To cope with these additional PS, each DM has also doubled the number of texture units. Each SP also had a second shipping port added for more efficient processing of the wire. Finish it off, has 32 ROPs GF104, divided into four sections. The result is that although at first glance look like it is only half the chip that has been GF100, GF104 is much more than that – something that is reflected in the number of transistor 1.95bn.

The 460 GTX is the latest addition to DirectX 11 Nvidia’s range of video cards. Aimed squarely at the mid-range market, it should be an excellent purchase for those looking for a decent amount of money. Let’s find is it to live up to expectations.

Nvidia’s first series of DirectX 11 graphics cards have not exactly set the world on fire. They were all based on a new architecture called Fermi and used a new chip based on this design, the GF100, which on paper looked very impressive. Unfortunately for Nvidia did not quite live up to its billing. The warmth, energy, and manufacturing issues primarily prey to the GTX 480 and GTX 470 and provided neither the performance to justify these compromises. In addition, Nvidia charged exorbitant prices for them (£ 450 +) during their first outing – it was not really a good episode for the company.

A few months later, he released the GTX 465, which used a very depressed (ie bit disabled) version of GF100, which was a stop gap to address the midrange market. However, he also failed to deliver on all fronts.
